It’s a problem! Being semi-retired I had to cut out all paid subscriptions. A friend shares Apple News, I get Axios free newsletters and follow lots on Substack - only as a free subscriber and apply for offers of free if you can’t afford it subs. It’s a hodgepodge that works ok enough. Is it ideal? Nope but it works. Apple News is great for me but not so great for news orgs I know. What amazes me is how many people can afford multiple Substack subs. Most run $100 per year and it’s just shocking when I read stats, how many people can do it. More super subscribers paying for the rest of us no doubt.
I don’t support oligarch curated news of any kind, print, digital. What is a way, we can support the I credible writing/research/analysis of journalists who are trapped in the oligarch model. Ppl must eat.
the logistics, even if we look at time taken to read subscriptions........there has to be a tipping point where it's too much....you dont get those hours back that you sit reading all the mind numbing news and posts that change what.........keep you informed.......and for what...........then theres the economics amidst the continuous bleeting of some about whats beyond the paywall......and you can be part of if you upgrade...........retired old dude here.........my pension only goes so far. Then some prick posts........just reached 7000 subscribers....or more. Do they think we are stupid? The economics or paying for good words is huge................AND then there's the inbox. In a week I can get nearly 1000 + emails from subscriptions to good writing and causes.............and I determined not to have the yahoo mail kinda inbox that seriously got away from me...............I regularily delete heaps that I don't and can't logistically read..............the plethora of subscriptions is jading me. The gems I find, the writers and poets, the artists in the most unlikely places...they hold me in sway.
Then there's my belief that there is a sort of elite on SubStack. Many of us nobodies, who don't seek a living or fame from our musing...............just imagine if one of these fat cat elites restacked one of your posts...................imagine. Instead they seem like black holes sucking and drawing in all they can get ............but the restack which could take you to new peeps....never happens. (note, I am a free SubStack)............I love those people who aren't about the living as in dollars and give you discouted or free access....but about causes and tribes. I restack massively positions, perspectives and people that or on the same page or I on theirs, or we are tribe members.....................but there is serious selfishness from some media elites on SubStack and I imagine all social media.
Agree - too much to read. I unsubscribe all the time where there are redundancies of info or I just find myself unable to read as much as I’m getting. But I don’t know about the elites, I don’t know who those people are. There are so many professional journalists on substack now, they come with huge followings after working in magazines and tv. It’s really hard to stick out if you don’t come with that.
I think the elites are the ones who don’t stoop to acknowledge a comment or you in anyway. Ohhh yeah, the logistics of answering all comments or affirmations may be huge…………………but it about connecting….and when they don’t………..sorry, your shite ain’t that shiney that if people respond u don’t. Its a thang like the gaze is always towards them……………..they are so busy making and writing……….they never look at you and think…hmmmm i might restack this. Nah….there is something they have to protect about themselves………..and their status………corse there is an elite, they show their existence by their lack of response and the one way direction of the traffic. Love Heather Richardson tho…..and JoJo, and a few other human nig hitters…..Dan rather, Elloit Kirshener……of course there is an elite……..the ones who make $ for substack….
I work in media and this keeps me up at night. Far too many people are trying to patch a sinking ship (legacy, ad-supported, print media) rather than finding more radical solutions that preserve and strengthen the best parts of accessible and fair news media.
There's free journalism. Glenn Greenwald is free, but in order to comment you have to pay. I admire this kind of format. Some portion of every outlet should be free.

We're working on a system for subscription ad revenue that should help local journalism. It's doable, just have to re-think what advertising can be.
