> This is embarrassing, not least because a billionaire is throwing his own employees under the bus because of his own decision not to make an endorsement
It seems like he wants to call the shots, but he doesn’t want to be held responsible.
There’s a reason I don’t subscribe to the Orange County Register, even though I live in Orange County. It’s because I can’t stomach supporting their awful editorial page.
Soong-Shiong can do what he wants with the L.A. Times. However, in order to gain conservative readers, he will have to be willing to sacrifice liberal readers like me.
I could easily cancel my subscription but that (in a very small way) would impact reporters doing their job. What do you suggest for those of us that want to show our displeasure with the owner other than cancellation?
I appreciate you sharing your position and Ms. Garza’s. I truly wish that Vice President Harris would be as committed to the policies impacting working class families that she would jeopardize her own personal career over them. As a lifelong Dem, former Congressional staffer and county elected official, I know this level of commitment to the issues is sadly lacking except with a few politicians. One of the exceptions is Mayor Bass who has thankfully taken such stands. I personally put more emphasis on unbiased daily reporting than endorsements and hope it continues. Granted, I used to care more when I was running for office. lol I do know though the public’s perception of newspaper endorsements has definitely changed over the past decade in particular. I support the journalists, and all the union members, regarding their right to receive a fair and decent wage for their labor. Something that billionaires never seem to support, yet Trump has at least half the working class convinced they do. Ugh. I wish you the best and look forward to following you here.
Get over myself for wanting unbiased reporting or for journalists to make a fair wage? Or get over myself for saying not many politicians, including the Dem POTUS nominee, would take a possible career ending stance. Or get over myself for saying too many members of the working class are convinced Trump is one of them? If the latter, it appears the editorial board agrees but could not print their position. I really don’t know what you mean so maybe you need to get over believing higher education is elitist, and learn how to better explain your position.
I don’t want Harris to take a possibly career ending stance. I want her to win and do as much good as she can do while in office, and still be able to win reelection. Losing doesn’t convey any benefits.
If a citizen does not cast a vote then they are supporting whoever ends up winning. It feels like a newspaper that does not endorse a candidate is doing the same.
I don't believe he's acting incompetently. I think he's being leaned on by his fellow South African billionaire boyfriends - "Leon" and Thiel. He just wiped out all the good things he's done for SoCal journalism in one fell swoop.
Did Patrick Soon-Shiong interfere with coverage of the LA Fed Tapes on behalf of Rick Caruso? Seemed like the coverage was being skewed to not identify certain figures in the recording in a way that would be embarrassing to Caruso, and ultimately point to the source of the leak. Did he push a racial aspect of the leak instead of a political one for October Surprise?

I have been a big fan of the Times, but I can’t abide this decision, so I canceled my subscription.

Unless it comes down to certain things like say sending our troops into a war for greed and ego. Then yeah I want that.
Smart take.

No, he did not.
