The problem right now is not enough participation, and the strongly held belief, by many, that they're vote doesn't matter. We've had four years of some fairly substantial legislation passed by the Biden Administration that nobody knows about. Those that might benefit most by progressive legislation have been led astray by Trump, their all knowing, and their social media bubbles. Legitimate journalism must somehow, someway, penetrate those bubbles.
How does one penetrate the bubble? that is the question. People existing in the Trump Bubble are engaging in an alternate reality. It is a reality filled with and consumed by joy. Of all things! Joy? Trump? Not for me, but for them it is an unapologetic euphoria of comradeship. Their alternate reality will not be swayed nor will its members deviate from the massive conformity, the catechism, the religion, of which they are part. Logic and rationale debate will not persuade Donald's Devoted Followers. The Bubble requires more than penetration. It must be burst. But how? And at what cost? I am concerned that the only way out requires misery and deprivation. And that cost will be imposed on all of us including Donald's Devoted. They just can't see it. Yet.
I agree with you, Warren. Isn't it possible that we are doomed? Time for a reality check. Might be time for me to sit in a cabin and just disengage from the noise.
I wish our legacy media would report to Americans that any political system comes in shades and gradients: democracy is on a spectrum. I believe Putin calls Russia a democracy. The term has almost become meaningless. Let’s remind Americans that there are different versions of democracy. It’s not binary.
It is almost as if we need to go block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, creating newsletters with/for the people we know. Do that for a while and then move up to join & combine
This should have more comments! Perhaps what's missing here is a recognition that so much news runs on sensational headlines. Simply put, the idea of democracy doesn't have the same sizzle of the strongman. What will Trump do next? Have you heard about Diddy? Oh my, look at the Luigi guy? That's what people want—not a serious conversation about democracy, much less liberalism, or even subversion. Run that through a bias-meter, ASAP!
